Supporting viable energy transition

Aquaterra Energy delivers CCS analysis informed by extensive shallow and deep‑water project experience. Our work spans exploration and appraisal well conductor assessments, advanced riser and subsea well modelling across varying water depths, for proven drilling analysis expertise. Enabling accurate predictions of CO₂ re‑pressurisation behaviour, and long‑term storage integrity.

Enabling well re-entry

Whilst there are strong similarities to oil & gas, CCS changes the loading environment. CO₂ injection creates different fatigue drivers and structural demands than hydrocarbon production. Our analysis accounts for this. Adapting various analysis methodologies such as exploration and appraisal conductor modelling, VIV and wave‑fatigue assessments, and operating‑envelope assessments, AE adapts to these new CO₂‑specific conditions.

By accounting for effects such as sweet‑corrosion and ultra‑low‑temperature effects, we validate that wells originally designed for traditional oil & gas operations are suitable for effective CO₂ containment.

FAQs

Drawing on decades of offshore conductor and riser analysis, our FAQs address the technical realities of CO₂ storage, helping operators reduce risk, validate existing assets and protect long-term integrity.

What makes CCS analysis different from traditional oil & gas analysis?

Carbon Capture and Storage introduces a different loading environment. CO₂ injection alters pressure regimes, temperature profiles, corrosion mechanisms and fatigue drivers. Unlike hydrocarbon production, CO₂ re-pressurisation can increase conductor and casing stresses. Our analysis accounts for ultra-low temperatures, sweet corrosion effects and long-term cyclic loading behaviour specific to CO₂ service.

Can existing oil & gas wells be reused for CO₂ storage?

In many cases, yes. However validation is essential. We assess whether existing conductors, casings and connectors can withstand CO₂ injection loads, re-pressurisation effects and long-term fatigue demands. Where required, we define strengthening measures or operating limitations to ensure safe and compliant storage performance.

What is CO₂ re-pressurisation behaviour and why does it matter?

CO₂ injection increases downhole and conductor pressures over time. This re-pressurisation can alter stress distributions, affect fatigue life and influence connector performance. Accurate modelling enables prediction of these effects, supporting safe operating envelopes and long-term storage integrity.

When should CCS analysis be carried out?

The greatest value is achieved at early project stages, when well designs and operating strategies remain flexible. Early-stage assessment reduces redesign risk, supports investment decisions and improves long-term storage confidence.

Every CCS project presents unique structural, environmental and operational challenges. Our offshore analysis specialists are ready to review your well conditions, injection strategy and integrity requirements to provide clear, experience-led guidance.
