Electrical, Instrumentation and Telecommunications Engineering Team Lead
Full-time (office based) Norwich
At Aquaterra Energy we specialise in providing engineering solutions and equipment to the global offshore energy industry – helping clients drive efficient and sustainable offshore operations from drilling and field development, to decommissioning, carbon capture and storage, renewable, and hydrogen projects.
We are seeking an experienced EIT Engineering Team Leader to take ownership of electrical, instrumentation and telecommunications (EIT) engineering activities for minimum facility fixed platforms—such as normally unmanned installations, wellhead platforms, or satellite platforms. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering fit-for-purpose, cost-effective, and compliant designs. You’ll work closely with multi-discipline teams throughout all phases of design to ensure seamless integration and project success.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Design Oversight Electrical Systems:
• Develop and review power distribution for remote / unmanned platforms, including solar photovoltaic (PV), battery systems, and small-scale diesel generators.
• Ensure optimal load management for low-voltage (LV) and high-voltage (HV) electrical systems.
• Specify and design hazardous area rated equipment in compliance with IEC 60079 (ATEX / Ex-rated equipment).
• Assist in performance of power system studies (load flow, fault analysis, and relay coordination) using ETAP or similar tools.
• Ensure reliable earthing, lightning protection, and cathodic protection systems.
• Define and develop electrical packages, e.g. lighting, navigation aids, HVAC, electrical switchgear, etc.
Instrumentation & Control Systems:
• Define and develop instrumentation and control system architecture for remote monitoring and operation.
• Design wellhead control panels (WHCPs), chemical injection unit packages (CIU), safety instrumented systems (SIS), emergency shutdown systems (ESD), and Fire & Gas Systems (FGS).
• Ensure instrumentation selection (pressure, temperature, level, metering, flow transmitters, and control valves) meets offshore and unmanned facility requirements.
• Conduct SIL assessment and implementation in compliance with IEC 61508 / 61511.
Telecommunication Systems:
• Assist in the Specification and design of remote communication systems (VSAT, VHF/UHF radios, PAGA, CCTV, and fibre-optic / microwave radio networks).
• Implement cybersecurity measures for remote monitoring and control.
Project Execution & Management
• Plan and oversee EIT engineering activities for all project phases.
• Review and approve engineering deliverables such as diagrams (cause and effects, single-line, layouts, etc), cable schedules, hazardous area drawings, control narratives, specifications and datasheets.
• Coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure timely selection of electrical and instrumentation and telecoms equipment.
• Interface with structural, mechanical, and process teams to ensure seamless integration of EIT systems.
• Support testing (FAT / SAT), construction, commissioning activities for electrical and control systems.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety
• Ensure all EIT designs comply with client standards, API, IEC, DNV, ABS, and local offshore regulations.
• Support HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, and functional safety reviews.
• Ensure adherence to IEC 60079 for hazardous area classification (explosive gas environments).
• Implement fail-safe and redundancy measures for unmanned facility control systems.
Team Leadership & Development
• Lead and mentor EIT engineers and designers, ensuring high-quality and efficient project execution.
• Provide technical guidance and training on offshore power, control, and telecom systems best practices.
• Foster a culture of cost optimisation and reliability in engineering designs.
Cross-Discipline Collaboration
• Work closely with operations, subsea, piping, structural, and process teams to integrate the EIT systems effectively.
• Ensure interfaces with host facilities, subsea pipelines, and remote control rooms are clearly defined, robust and reliable.
About You:
• Educated to minimum of HND or equivalent standard in Instrumentation or control / Electrical Engineering.
• Proven experience in Instrumentation, control and safety systems design
• Proven experience in delivery of project scopes
• Proven experience in application of DSEAR / ATEX
• Minimum 10 years’ experience in the Oil & Gas, Petrol Chemical or similar industry
• Proven understanding of the design process and ability to demonstrate working knowledge of brief / scope documents, design concepts, and technical experience (calculations etc.)
• Computer literate in Microsoft packages
• Good analytical skills and ability to meet deadlines
• Good mentoring and leadership skills
• Self-motivated, enthusiastic and able to work as a team member and communicate effectively with onshore and offshore staff at all levels.
